S108 Light My Menorah
The command given to Aharon and his sons to light (אור) and maintain the candles (נרות) on the menorah (מנורה) in the Holy Place of the Sanctuary is no small thing (Numbers 8:1-9:23). Though the tribe of Levi did not previously offer up anything for the inauguration of the tabernacle, they themselves became the offering when they were chosen for their priestly tasks and committed as a wave offering! In the Brit HaChadasha, we find others who were chosen for the specific spiritual task (John 15:16-19), and commanded to also be light in a dark world (Luke 11:34-35). Clearly, God does not need light, but man does and part of our priestly task is to keep light going out to light our world.Kyle A. Kettering
